Northern State Medical University
The Northern State Medical University (NSMU) was established about 70 years ago and now it is a big scientific-educational-training institution. 70 professors work at the University. Many of them are well-known scientists, founders of scientific schools.
Our university is an officially recognized centre for training medical and medico-social personnel in the European North of Russia. Training starts already in secondary school. Coming from the same part of the country with our great Russian scientist -encyclopaedist M.V. Lomonosov, who believed that a university without a lyceum was the same as a plough-field without seeds, we created a system of continuing professional education: university lyceum – university college – basic faculties – faculty of retraining.
Potential professionals of all possible medical and medico-social professional lines study at 12 Faculties and in 3 Institutes of the NSMU. Since 2001 students have an opportunity to study at two high schools at the same time, the second high school can be the Institute of Informational Technologies or the Institute of Management. The University is in close collaboration with clinics and in the very first year of studies students learn about their future work, learn the experience of their senior colleagues.
All graduates apply their knowledge and skills acquired at the University in the field of healthcare. All the NSMU graduates pass different certification exams when applying for jobs at clinical establishments of any country of the world – from Europe to Australia. We are proud of our former medical students working in many clinics all around the world. At present our scientists including the young ones collaborate with leading experts from the European Universities and clinics as equals, take part in the international scientific projects, and they are among the experts of the World Health Organisation. The University organizes the students’ studies and leisure in such a way that they can try themselves in different kinds of activities. For this purpose there is a studio-theatre “Poisk” at the University, sport activities are arranged, students publish a student’s newspaper “Students Liber”, they also take part in different festivals and competitions. Leaders of the University believe that a personality is always more important than a position or social role, that is why they support and encourage creative ideas of young people.
